People gather at AKM to honor Sırrı Süreyya Önder 2025-05-04 11:15:09 ISTANBUL – People have begun to gather at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) to participate in the memorial service for Sırrı Süreyya Önder.   Sırrı Süreyya Önder, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament and a member of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party Imralı Delegation, passed away on Saturday at Florence Nightingale Hospital, where he had been receiving intensive care treatment.   The memorial is taking place today at the AKM in Taksim. The ceremony is set to begin at 11:00 am local time, and numerous individuals from both the art and political spheres have already started arriving at the location.   The event will start with a moment of silence, followed by a video presentation detailing Sırrı Süreyya Önder's life. Several speeches will be made by his daughter, Ceren Önder Kandemir; DEM Party Co-Chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan; Imralı Delegation member Pervin Buldan.    Once the ceremony concludes, a funeral prayer will take place at Levent Barbaros Mosque after the afternoon prayers. Sırrı Süreyya Önder will be laid to rest at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.   Furthermore, the DEM Party will begin accepting condolences starting Monday at the Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall in Istanbul, as well as at their offices in various provinces and districts across the country.
