ANKARA - Standing trial for killing a man whom he thought was battering his partner, Kadir Şeker was first sentenced to 15 years in prison by the heavy penal court. With good conduct time, his prison sentence has been reduced to 12 years, 6 months.

Arrested for killing a man while he was trying to prevent him from inflicting violence on his partner, Kadir Şeker had his final hearing at the 3rd Heavy Penal Court in Central Anatolian province of Konya today (October 14).

In the opinion as to the accusations announced by the prosecutor, it was said that the crime was committed under provocation, requesting that Şeker be penalized on charge of "wilful killing" on the lowest limit and his sentence be reduced due to provocation on the highest level.

Handing down its judgement, the court first ruled that Şeker should be sentenced to 15 years in prison. With good conduct abatement, his prison sentence has been reduced to 12 years and 6 months.

The indictment lodged against Kadir Şeker demanded 12 years to 18 years in prison on charge of "wilful killing" with the good conduct time included and 6 months to 1 year as part of the "crimes related to prohibited knives and other objects and its penalties."

BACKGROUND

According to allegations, preparing for the university entrance exams, Kadir Şeker saw a man battering his partner in a park in Selçuklu, Konya on February 5. When he went to intervene, he was verbally and physically attacked by Özgür Duran. While Duran reportedly chased after Şeker and battered him, he was stabbed by Şeker in the ensuing fight.

Stabbed in his chest, Duran was taken to the Selçuk University Faculty of Medicine Hospital in an ambulance. He lost his life there.

Following the blood on the ground, police officers found Şeker in his maternal aunt's home, where he lived, and took him into custody. Kadir Şeker was remanded in custody by the judgeship.

Accepted by the Konya 3rd Heavy Penal Court, the indictment demanded 12 years to 18 years in prison for Şeker on charge of "wilful killing under unjust provocation." Some women also launched a social media campaign, demanding that Şeker be not penalized.
