'Military process is the reason of ecological destruction'

DİYARBAKIR - Pointing out that nature is being plundered with fake reports, lawyer Ahmet Inan emphasized the importance of local organizations against the prevention of destruction.

The AKP's road and dam constructions in Kurdistan under the name of "security" deepen the ecological plunder. In Amed, where nature has been plundered, tree cutting continues in Geliyê Goderne, which is located between Pasûr (Kulp), Farqîn (Silvan) and Hezro (Hazro) counties. On the one hand, sand and gravel are extracted in the Tigris River, which feeds the Hevsel Gardens, which was included in the World Heritage List by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and gives life to the region. On the other hand, forest areas around Dicle University are wanted to be opened for development. Sarim Basin, which is located between Amed's Licê district and Çewlig's Dara Hênê district, is also threatened by the Hydroelectric Power Plant (HEPP) and security dams.

Ahmet Inan from the Amed(Diyarbakır) Bar Association City and Environmental Law Commission, who filed a criminal complaint about the ecological destruction in the region, evaluated the ecological massacres and judicial processes.

Indicating that trees were cut down in Hevsel Gardens, gravel and sand were removed from the banks of the Tigris River, the forest area within the territory of Dicle University was wanted to be opened for development, trees were cut down in Geliyê Godernê for "security" reasons and an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report was given for the construction of a HEPP in Sarım Stream, he evaluated these projects as 'unlawful'.

NON-PROSECUTION ON CRIMINAL COMPLAINT

Noting that the Amed Bar Association and the Ecology Association filed a criminal complaint with the prosecutor's office regarding the logging in Geliyê Godernê, İnan shared the information that the application resulted in non-prosecution. It is the private property of the people. Inan said: "The permission is being cut off; however, it is the common area of the public. 80-90 percent are not title deed areas."

Indicating that they have also filed an action for annulment against the HEPP project planned to be built in the Sarim Stream Basin, İnan said: "The judicial process continues at the Regional Administrative Court. We filed a criminal complaint with the prosecutor's office regarding the extraction of sand and gravel from the banks of the Tigris River. We will initiate a legal process with the announcement of the result of the zoning plan for the forest area at Dicle University.

'THE MILITARY PROSES IS THE REASON OF DESTRUCTION IN KURDISTAN'

Sharing that the denunciations made regarding the destruction of nature resulted in non-prosecution,Inan said: "There is no possibility of canceling the destruction of nature, dams and power plants made for military purposes in the region. The importance of organizing locally against the destruction of nature in Kurdistan and Turkey. It is very important that the local people do not want to react reactively and try to protect their own nature, water and habitat. It starts locally. We, as Diyarbakır Bar Association Environment and Urban Commission, cannot go and say, 'we are filing an annulment case against Sarım Stream' on behalf of Sarım people. We do not encounter any support, and the people who already live there have the capacity to sue. The most important point is that people at the local level create a reaction and say 'we do not want'. Work starts here. In the next stage, it is very important that the bar association, NGOs and the press are involved. It is important that there is a reaction from the local first, and then that this reaction expands towards the universal and reaches a national dimension. This is the healthiest and most effective organizational method.”
