MÊRDÎN - Lawyer Azad Kaya emphasized that the violations regarding the suicide attempt and suspicious death in Mardin Type E Closed Prison must be exposed.

Prisoner Mizgin Acar, who allegedly attempted suicide in Mardin Type E Closed Prison on October 1, continues to be treated in intensive care. The statements of prison guards and prison officials were taken as part of the investigation launched after Acar, who is still in life-threatening condition, allegedly attempted suicide. While it is learned that the investigation is being conducted with the suspicion of suicide, the notes Acar allegedly wrote on the wall and in her notebook have not yet been shared with her family and lawyers.

'WE HAVE OUR SUSPICIONS'

Azad Kaya, a lawyer from the Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD), stated that they have serious doubts about Acar's condition. Kaya stated that after Acar was taken to the hospital, her family was informed that “she committed suicide” and said that they met with the family and lawyers. Stating that they could not get information about Acar's notes from the prison administration, Kaya said: “Her notes and materials were not given to her family and lawyer on the grounds that the prosecutor's examination has not yet been completed. However, we have serious suspicions. The note written by Mizgin Acar must be made public. Even if the claim that she committed suicide in prison is true, it must be revealed what kind of negligence occurred. The prison administration says Mizgin Acar had psychological problems. It is said that she was kept under observation in prison. If she was under observation, how she attempted suicide must be explained.”

'NEGLIGENCE MUST BE EXPOSED'

Reminding that İbrahim Boğurcu allegedly died of a heart attack in Mardin Type E Closed Prison on October 13, Kaya stated that prisoners are kept under isolation in prisons. “There has been one death and an alleged suicide attempt in Mardin Prison within 2 weeks. The authorities have to investigate this. They have to ask what is happening in Mardin Prison. The necessary investigations must be carried out as soon as possible and independent committees must be given permission to investigate. It must be investigated whether Mizgin Acar committed suicide or was murdered. Even if she committed suicide, the reasons and negligence that led her to commit suicide must be uncovered. Again, even if İbrahim Boğurcu had a heart attack, it should be examined whether the health service in prison is adequate, whether she had similar complaints before, whether she was referred to a hospital despite this. Necessary investigations must be carried out” Kaya said.

'ISOLATION MUST BE ABANDONED'

Stating that they will follow the processes regarding the situation of both Mizgin Acar and İbrahim Boğurcu, Kaya continued as follows: “Unfortunately, violations of the right to life are among the violations of rights in prisons. In this sense, we have recently seen how Abdulkadir Kuday, an ill prisoner, was expected to die. What is happening in Mardin prison today is unfortunately not independent of these. Therefore, violations of rights in prisons must be stopped immediately and isolation practices must be abandoned. The prisoners' relatives should be provided with more transparent information.”
