NEWS CENTER – Another 100 Yazidi families who were displaced due to the attacks by ISIS have returned to Shengal.
The return of Yazidi (Êzidî) who were forced to flee their lands following ISIS attacks continues. According to reports, 100 families have returned to Shengal from the Xankê and Çem Mişko camps in Duhok. These families have resettled in the villages of Dugirê, Girzerik, and Sikêniyê.
Sources indicate that a total of 270 families are expected to return to Shengal within three days.
Iraq's Ministry of Migration and Displacement had previously announced plans to close all camps in the Kurdistan Region by 2024. However, apart from the camps in Erbet, under Sulaymaniyah administration, none of the camps controlled by the KDP have been closed. The Iraqi authorities have not implemented their own decision, and no explanation has been made to the public regarding the delay.
According to information shared by aid organizations working with displaced people, there are nearly 10 Yazidi camps still operating in Duhok. Of the 65,000 Shengalî IDPs in the Kurdistan Region, 31,000 are still living in camps under harsh seasonal conditions, while 34,000 are dispersed across various villages and towns.
Although 95 percent of Yazidi IDPs have registered to return, the process remains slow due to bureaucratic obstacles. Many families are attempting to return to Shengal despite limited means and support.
