MERSİN- The women attorneys in Mersin stated that if the women offenders got released with the remission of punishment bill ,the threat against women will continue increasing.

The discussions started with the remission of punishment bill introduced by Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) is still on the agenda. While the bill will let 162  prisoners and convicts have a 5 year remission , the violent men who offended and assulted women can go free.

'IT IS CLEAR THAT THE VIOLENCE WILL CONTINUE'

Attorney Azize Kurnaz stated that wtih  the remission of punishment bill, because the crimes like threat, bodily injury, insult and harresment will be involved, the threat against women will continue.Kurnaz: " There is a fact that violent criminals who gets a remission , usually gets arrested again for the same crime. This has become a social threat. Choosing remission to empty the prisons will cause new crimes and and create social unrest. Violence, threats and sex offenses against women will continue."

'THIS IS A LAW FOR ÇAKICI'

Kurnaz arguing that this is could be a personel remission said : " We could say that this remission is personal considering the government's discourse. Just like the bill on paid military service bill passed on November 14, 1999 was called Tarkan Law, this will be called Çakıcı Law in due time. The reason for that is the government partner's will. The second reason is that the prisons are holding twice their capacity and the government is trying to make the public believe that the government is supporting them factiously."

'THE VIOLENCE AGAINS WOMEN WILL BE LEGITIMIZED'

Attorney Sebahat Gençtarih who stated that releasing men who committed violent crimes against women with a remission is a clear threat against women also said that even though the bill doesn't include sexual assault crimes, it includes everything else like threat, bodily injury, insult etc. This resolution contradicts with the law # 6284 The protection of the family and law on the prevention of violence against women and the  international conventions. On the other hand, distinguishing the crimes of violence against women and children from sexual assault on women and children will catayze the legitimization of other violent crimes."

'THE BILL IS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF THE GOVERNMENT'

Gençtarih, " It is said that the crime "propaganda" is removed from the bill. That means the crimes against the freedom of thought or any other political crimes are not in the bill yet, violent criminals, rapists, thieves, drug dealers seem to be on a higher place in the eyes of the people who are presenting the bill. This makes it clear that the bill is in accordance with the objective of the government."
