DİYARBAKIR - Police officer Uğur K who ran over 85 year old Mehmet Tektekin with a water cannon eeas sentenced to 2 years 9 months and 10 days in prison.
85 year old Mehmet Tektekin who was trying to get across the street on June 6, 2018 in Diyarbakır, Bağlar, was injured after a water cannon ran him over. Tektekin lost his life 2 days after he was admitted to the hospital. The police who was driving the water cannon gave his testimony as a suspect with the charge 'reckless injury'.
The judge sentenced Uğur K to 2 years and 6 months for negligent killing. The judge then increased the sentence by 1/3 and made the sentence 2 years and 16 months, but then reduced the prison sentence to 2 years 9 months and 10 days considering the possible effects of the sentence on the defendant's future.
The judge ruled that there was no room to postpone the sentence and to convert it to a fine.
The defendant's lawyer appealed against the verdict to the Antep District Courthouse Court.
