WAN - Serav Municipality Co-Mayor Abdulkadir Çalişkan, who was released from Van Prison and a trustee appointed instead of him, said that the purpose of the serious violations of rights against prisoners is intimidation.
Abdulkadir Çalişkan, who a trustee was appointed instead of him when he was the Co-Mayor of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Serav/Mehmudi (Saray) Municipality in Wan and was arrested on March 20, 2017, was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months in prison on the charge of "being a member of a terrorist organization". Çalişkan was released from the Van High Security Prison on September 27.
Çalışkan explained the violations of rights in the prison and called on the public to be sensitive to the experiences of the prisoners.
Abdulkadir Çalışkan
LAW IS NOT IMPLEMENTED
Stating that prisons are not places suitable for human rights, Çalışkan said: "Many of our friends wrote petitions to the Ministry of Justice and authorized persons and institutions regarding the violations. However, a solution has not been produced."
INTIMIDATION POLICY
Underlining that there are serious violations of rights in prison with the aim of "intimidation", Çalışkan said: "These are done with political powers. The biggest indicator of the lack of justice is that the prisoners, who should be released on conditional release, do not avail themselves of this right. It is politics, not the law, in prison. Prisoners were exiled to places far from their families with a conscious policy. The sentence of the prisoners who have committed disciplinary offenses in the last period is extended by 3-6 months or 1 year. Prisoners who commit disciplinary offenses are already punished by being thrown into cells, but they increase their sentence and impose a second sentence. Another violation is the failure to release the prisoners on the grounds that they are not in 'good conduct'."
