HATAY - Lawyer Mehtap Sert, who visited the prisoners in Iskenderun Type T Closed Prison, said: "Humane treatment is even seen a lot for prisoners who have been traumatized by earthquakes and have not received support, lost their relatives, and were deprived of their right to say goodbye."
Lawyer Mehtap Sert, Member of the Human Rights Association (İHD) Central Prison Commission, visited the prisoners in İskenderun Type T Closed Prison after the Maraş-centered earthquake. Sharing the rights violations that the prisoners are exposed to, Sert stated that the prisoners have problems with eating, drinking and heating, as well as communicating with their families.
PSYCHOLOGICAL VIOLENCE INCREASED
Stating that D.K.D., one of the prisoners, stated that they were given drinking water per person, that there was no water in the canteen and that the doors were not opened on the day of the earthquake, Sert said that despite the freezing cold in the prison, the heating did not turn on for two weeks. Stating that prisoner E.Y.Ö., whose house and workplace belonging to his family were destroyed in the earthquake, said that the ward for 7 people was given food for 2 people, Sert continued: "The petitions submitted by the prisoners are not received. The prison prosecutor came and met with the wards, but did not meet with the prisoners in the political wards. After the earthquake, the doors were closed. It was not opened and the prisoners thought they would die. No psychological support was given. They can only buy water and cigarettes from the canteen. The guards have changed. The food is insufficient. The psychological violence has increased a lot in the prison. What is the reason for the guards to increase psychological violence and starve while prisoners are suffering so much? We will settle accounts before the law with those responsible for increasing the torture during disasters."
