The report was announced at a press conference at the branch building. Central Executive Board Meeting member Nuray Çevirmen exposed the main violations reported in prisons in the months of April-May and June.

 

Among the issues are those related to the right to health particularly in prisons in Central Anatolia where the regulatory requirements of the prisoners and international agreements signed by Turkey are not met.

 

165 APPLICATIONS

 

Çevirmen noted that a total of 165 people - 123 in Central Anatolian Regional Prison and 42 for other prisons - applied to the IHD Ankara Branch in April-May-June.

 

Çevirmen underlined that the violations in the report were related to the following prisons: Afyonkarahisar No 1 Type, Aksaray T Type, Bolu F Type, Eskişehir L Type, Karaman T Type, Kırıkkale F Type, Kırşehir ET Type, Seydişehir E Type, Sincan Woman, Sincan Number 1 L Type and Tokat T Type Closed Prison.

 

Among the violations reported are the following:

 

* Prisoners cannot go to the hospital, and in very urgent cases, they remained alone in quarantine wards during the 14-day quarantine period. Prisoners who could not stay alone could not go to the hospital precisely because they cannot stay alone and meet their needs.

 

* Although requested, the cells are not disinfected. Only 1 bottle of bleach was given.

 

* The needs of prisoners who went to the hospital were not adequately met during the quarantine.

 

* Despite the demands of prisoners who are seriously ill about the protection of their health, measures have not been taken.

 

* The hygiene and disinfectant materials for ill prisoners are not sufficient.

 

According to the report of the IHD at least 32 detainees were subjected to torture and ill-treatment in prisons in the Central Anatolia region in April-May-June 2020.
