MARDİN - Halil Y. who was 'persuaded' by his family to return which was published by the pro-government media with headlines such as 'Former PKK member reunited with his family', was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 13 years and 9 months of prison sentence.

The people instructed by the government to stage a sit in in front of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Diyarbakır Provincial Building since September 2019 claiming that their sons and dayghters were kidnapped by the PKK, are attempting to have their children surrender with the instructions of the police, gendermerie and National Intelligence Organization (MİT) members. Dozens of families in Mardin were called by the police and the gendermerie and asked the families to get in touch with their children in the PKK and promise that they will be released once they surrender.

Halil Y. and Irak national Cesur K. crossed the border on December 16, 2019 as a result of their families trying to persuade them and surrendered.

PRO-GOVERNMENT MEDIA SAID THEY WERE REUNITED WITH THEIR FAMILIES

Halil Y.'s meeting with his family at the Mardin Provincial Security Directorate on 30 December 2019 was served by the media with the headline "The terrorist who surrendered has reunited with his family". In the meeting, attended only by his mother and one of his siblings, it was said that Halil Y. would be released after being in prison for 3-4 months. However, that promise was never kept by the government.

SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT

An indictment was prepared for Halil Y. and Cesur K. on mutliple charges on March 17, 2020. Following a trial at the Mardin 4th High Criminal Court, Halil Y. was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of 'disrupting the unity of the state'.

The court also sentenced Halil Y. to 13 years and 9 months on charges of 'deliberate killing' and 'possession of a fire arm".

Cesur K. was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months on charges of 'being a member of a terrorist organization' and 1 year 3 months for 'possession of a firearm. The court decided to continue the detention of both men.
