ISTANBUL - A prison sentence was demanded for journalist Cengiz Çandar, the Green Left Party Amed(Diyarbakır) MP candidate, for allegedly praising the "crime and the criminal" in his post 6 years ago.
Greens and Left Future Party (Green Left Party), Amed MP candidate journalist Cengiz Çandar's post on Ayşe Deniz Karacagil, known as the “Girl in the Red Scarf” and who lost her life fighting against ISIS in Raqqa, on May 30, 2017. The second hearing of the case in which he was prosecuted for media sharing was held at the Istanbul 30th Criminal Court of First Instance.
The hearing, which was planned to be held on April 11, was moved to today after the request of Çandar's lawyers was accepted. Çandar, his lawyers Veysel Ok and Merve Kurhan attended the hearing.
THE PROSECUTOR DEMANDED PRISON SENTENCE
The prosecution, which submitted its opinion to the court, demanded that Çandar be punished by emphasizing the "clear and imminent danger" in the lawsuit filed in 2020 for the post made in 2017, and pointing out that Çandar was a journalist at the time the post was made. The prosecutor also requested that lawyer Ok's request be dismissed.
Announcing its interim decision, the court accepted Çandar's lawyer's request for time to prepare his defense against the opinion on the merits and adjourned the hearing to May 16.
ALLEGATION
In the indictment, a prison sentence of up to 2 years is demanded for Çandar on the charge of "praising the crime and the criminal" for the post that reads, "The girl with the red scarf, the most beautiful smiling angel of Gezi who warmed our hearts, fell to the ground in front of Raqqa and rose to the stars and burned us again."
