ISTANBUL - DİSK Press Workers Union Chairperson Faruk Eren stated that the Free Press will not be silenced by detentions and arrests as in the past, while MLSA Co-Director Veysel Ok said: "The most important thing to do in this period is solidarity."
At least 126 people, including journalists, politicians, lawyers and artists, were detained in house raids carried out simultaneously in 21 cities within the scope of the investigation carried out by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. While no information was obtained about the reason for detention, since a confidentiality order was placed on the file, condemnations from different segments of the society continue to come.
ELECTIONAL MOVE
Confederation of Revolutionary Workers' Unions (DİSK) Press and Workers' Union Chairperson Faruk Eren pointed to the presidential and parliamentary elections to be held on May 14 and stated that the security of the elections was jeopardized by the detentions. Stating that the detained journalists were journalists who took the pulse of the election and shared it with the public, so the detention is as an "attack", Eren said: "We are entering an anti-democratic and pressured election. Increasing these pressures raises our concerns. The targeting of the Kurdish press, in particular, shows that it is an election move.”
