ISTANBUL - A petition campaign has been launched for the release of ill prisoner Nevzat Öztürk, who has been in prison for more than 31 years and whose release has been prevented.

A petition campaign has been launched by his family living in Germany for the release of ill prisoner Nevzat Öztürk, who is in Bolu Type F Closed Prison and whose release has been postponed recently.

Öztürk, who has been in prison for more than 31 years and has a heart condition, was detained in Istanbul in 1992. Öztürk was arrested by the State Security Court (DGM) after being detained for 14 days at the Gayrettepe Police Department. In the lawsuit filed, Öztürk was given a life sentence for "destroying the unity and integrity of the state". Öztürk was transferred to 5 different prisons during his detention.

Öztürk, who was transferred to Bolu Type F Closed Prison, has been in prison for 31 years and 4 months. Despite the fact that Öztürk, who is an ill prisoner, completed his execution on June 23, he is not released due to the report given by the Prison Administration and Observation Board. Öztürk's release was postponed for another 3 months on the grounds of "not using electricity sparingly" and "not reading enough books in the prison library".
