Journalist Kaya: Garé cleared off the atmosphere of the fear

NEWS CENTER - Stating that what happened in Garé cleared of the atmosphere of fear for some powers against Turkey, Journalist Nihat Kaya said AKP may carry out some new operations to North and East Syria to make everyone forget about the outcomes of the Garé operation.

The discussions about the operation Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) carried out against Garé with 41 war planes and many troops on February 10 continue. A total of 16 people 12 of whom were soldiers, police officers and MİT members held captive by the PKK were killed in the operation. Even though the government says the operation was a success, the public opinion seems to think otherwise. The opposition parties that side with the government everytime regarding the war policies of the government have stood against it after a very long time and critisized the failure.

Even though the government said that it was a rescue operation, PKK executives made a statement and drew attention to the fact that the aim of the operation was to kill the hostages.

Nihat Kaya, who has been a journalist in the region for many years, evaluated the latest developments.

WHY WAS GARÊ PREFERRED?

Kaya pointed out that if what happened in Garé would be adressed in terms of military and political sense, one can see why it is a filure for the AKP. Stating that the opposition criticized AKP as a result of the operation, Kaya told that the target was the opposition when the operation was planned. Kaya said: "When AKP fails to keep up with the opposition, its main tactic is to direct the internal opposition to the outside. It creates a perception of danger that may come from the outside, force the people to stand with him in the face of the danger coming from foreign actors and silence the opposition. It did it in Efrin, Libya, Karabakh, Girê Spî and Serekaniyê.

Stating that the operation was carried out against Garé instead of North and East Syria or Shengal because the approach of the new administration of the United States is not known yet, Kaya said AKP preferred Garé because the international reaction would be less for Garé. Expressing that this operation was inspired from the US operation against ISIS Leader Ebubekir al-Baghdadi, Kaya said: "They were trying to create a heroic epic. If they had an intention to save the hostages, this would not be the kind of operation they would plan. Their aim was to create a heroic epic and silence the opposition. But not everything work like they would in the movies."

WHAT DOES THE ARAB WORLD THINK?

Expressing that the AKP wants to create a similar situation with the idea that it has achieved a "victory" in Syria, Libya and Karabakh from its point of view, Kaya underlined that the events were effective in re-determining the balance of power in the region. Kaya pointed out that the Iraqi central government ignored the operation because of its own internal problems, and pointed out that some groups within the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) remained silent after the operation despite their support for the operation. Stating that the KDP withdrew itself due to the failure of the operation, Kaya said, "The fact that KDP stepped back shows that there is a change in the balances. On the other hand, the fact that some powers had to step back in Libya, the Mediterranean and Syria because of Turkey had created an atmosphere of fear. What happened in Garé wiped that atmosphere clean. It showed that Turkey can be defeated. It showed that Turkey can not always get the results it wants. The Arab world was against this operation too. Almost all of the Arab countries made statements that this could not be a rescue operation and Turkey tried to invade Iraqi terriroty."

'EFFECT OF THE OPERATION IN GARE'

Stating that the attitude of the USA will be the same with it's initial statement, Kaya said Turkey was alianated in the region. Underlining that the KDP can not break away from Turkey because of its economical relationship with it and the oil exchange, Kaya said the fate of AKP and KDP is now tied together. Referring to the effects of the operation in North and East Syria, Kaya said: "Everyone thinks that after what happened in Garé, AKP will attack somewhere else and hope everyone forgets about its failure in Garé. This is why they are taking serious precautions."
