NEWS CENTER - Human rights activists arrested by the KDP in June 2020 began a death fast.

 

The second hearing of the trial against the human rights activists Mesud Elî Haci, Bendewar Eyub, Karger Ebas Elî and Şêrwan Teha Emin, arrested by the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in June 2020, was held at the Hewler Court. The hearing was postponed to a later date due to the change of the head of the court.

 

FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS ARE DENIED

 

Through their lawyers, human rights activists announced that they started a death fast to demand a fair trial. The lawyer of the activists, Beşdar Hesen, made a statement regarding the lawsuit process. Stating that the basic rights of the detainees are being denied, Hesen said that they are even prevented from meeting with their families. Hesen stated that the prisoners started a death fast to protest the practices and the court's decision.

 

CPT: THE APPLICATIONS OF THE KDP IS ILLEGAL

 

Kamaran Osman, Represantative of the Christian Peacemakers Team (CPT)  in the city of Sulaymaniyah in the Iraqi Federated Kurdistan Region, stated that the prison administration doesn't allow the prisoners to be visited by their families and lawyers, which is their basic right. These applications are illegal.  The federal Kurdistan government and the Court of Appeal should examine the file, and the activists should be released.”
