İZMİR- Yunus Özcan, son of Kenan Özcan, who lost his life in Afyon Bolvadin Prison, said that they could not receive information about the disease or what caused his father to die.

 

Violations of rights in prison are increasing day by day. Kenan Özcan, 66, was arrested in 2016 for being a member of the Gülen movement. After he died in Afyon Bolvadin Type C Closed Prison on September 20, his son said that he did not know the cause of his father's death.

 

HE  ARRESTED FOR 5 YEARS

 

He was sentenced to 9 years in his trial. First, Menemen, then Şakran T-Type finally, was sent to Afyon Bolvadin C-Type Closed Prison in February 2021. It was stated that Özcan, who has a heart rhythm disorder, lived with sublingual pills. Despite all the attempts of his family, they did not set free him.Özcan was imprisoned for about 5 years and died on 20 September.  He was taken to the hospital without informing his family.

 

'WHY CAN'T WE READ?'

 

His son Yunus Özcan spoke about the reason for his father's arrest and death: No evidence was found about the accusations against my father, he was arrested with secret witness statements. They claim that by stealing my father's exam questions, he placed people in units such as the police. Does this make sense? My father has 5 children. None of them are college graduates. If he had such power, why didn't he give this opportunity to his children? So why am I a porter in the industry?"

 

HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPİTAL 3 DAYS AGO

 

Yunus Özcan: On September 20, Eskişehir City Hospital called us and said, "Your father's condition is bad. Anything can happen at any moment."  We immediately set off from Izmir with my brothers. However, while we were still on the road, the hospital called us again and said that my father had died. Just then, an acquaintance of mine who was in my father's ward called us and asked how my father was. While these were happening, the prison administration did not give us any information. There are many contradictions regarding his illness and death. No information was given to resolve the questions in our minds about this.

 

AUTOPSY WAS DONE WITHOUT FAMILY KNOWLEDGE

 

Özcan said: "No one, from his doctor to his staff, gave us any information. We got the answer to every question we asked, 'we cannot give this information. We learned that the body was taken to Eskişehir Osmangazi University Faculty of Medicine. As a result of long efforts, we were able to find the body after an autopsy from the morgue of Osmangazi medical school."

 

THE CAUSE OF DEATH IS INVESTİGATİNG

 

Adding that they were only given a paper about his father's death saying "The cause of death is being investigated", Özcan said, "The cause of death is still not diagnosed. Hospitals did not give us an explanation as to what disease my father died from. It was said that the autopsy report would take up to 8 months" used the expressions

Özcan said: “We have been longing for almost 5 years. How did the persecution in this country come to this stage? They did not even allow 1-2 hours of the last meeting. This situation hurts the conscience and the sense of justice to a great extent.”
